Understanding Carbon Labelling: Making Sustainable Food Choices Easier

Introducing Carbon Labelling

At JPRestaurants, we’re passionate about minimising our impact on the environment. That’s why we’re proud to introduce carbon labelling across our menus: a simple way to help you make informed, sustainable food choices.

Collaborating with the Government of Jersey, we are the first restaurant group in Jersey to participate in their carbon labelling pilot program, Plate to Planet. This is a world-first partnership of Government and local business joining forces to trial carbon labelling in the hospitality sector. As an eco active business member, we’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and supporting a more sustainable future for our Island and further afield.

What’s Carbon Labelling?

Every food choice we make impacts the environment. From farming and processing, to packaging and transport, the food we eat creates greenhouse gases, driving climate change. The total amount of these emissions is referred to as a food product’s carbon footprint.

A carbon label provides a clear, easy-to-understand measure of a dish or product’s carbon footprint, empowering Islanders to make carbon conscious choices, if they so wish. Plate to Planet uses an A-E rating system to display these ratings:

  • A : Very low carbon impact
  • E: Very high carbon impact

In partnership with the Government of Jersey, we’ve calculated carbon footprints using My Emissions carbon accounting software, which assesses every stage of a food product’s journey – from the farm to the café or restaurant. For a more detailed understanding of how My Emissions calculate these ratings, see their website.

How are we introducing Carbon Labelling?

Within the Plate to Planet pilot, we’ve started our carbon labelling journey with Café Ubé, where you’ll now see carbon ratings (A to E) displayed on shelf labels for all our café-made products. Additionally, we’ve created a full Carbon Menu on the Café Ubé website, making it easy to explore and choose the most sustainable options.

We’re proud that over 75% of the Café Ubé menu achieves A or B ratings, meaning most of our dishes have a low to very low carbon footprint. By displaying these ratings, we aim to empower you to make choices that are better for the planet, while enjoying the delicious food you love.

Later in 2025, we plan to expand carbon labelling to our restaurant menus at Jersey Crab Shack, Banjo, and Oyster Box. Alongside highlighting the lowest carbon options on our menus, we’ll also publish full Carbon Menus on each restaurant’s website, providing a transparent overview of the environmental impact of every dish.

Why It Matters

Our commitment to carbon labelling is about more than just numbers – it’s about taking tangible steps toward a greener future. This Government-local business partnership is helping Islanders and visitors to understand the carbon impact of their food choices, creating a culture of sustainability and allowing everyone to play a part in reducing carbon emissions. Together, we can make a difference: one meal at a time.
