Our Green Story (2)

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. It’s about making a positive impact on our Island, our Environment, and our Community, and considering these areas in everything that we do.

Why go green?

JPRestaurants was founded in Jersey more than 75 years ago, and we are proud to consider ourselves a truly local business. We love our Island, its beautiful environment, and its diverse community. We want to make sure that Jersey remains a unique and special place for years to come, and that we make a positive contribution to the Island community that has supported our business over the decades. It’s not about planting the odd tree every now and then; it’s about considering the impact of everything we do, and working on ways to be better across our business.

Green Awards

We’re delighted to have achieved a Gold Green Tourism award, and to be an Eco-Active Leader business.

What’s Green Tourism?

Green Tourism is an organisation that works to promote sustainability in the global tourism industry. The organisation offers internationally-respected accreditation for businesses to help hotels, accommodation providers, restaurants, activity providers, tour guides, and all other tourism-related businesses to operate sustainably: saving resources like energy and water, and looking after the environment.

Gold is the highest standard of accreditation that can be awarded, and reflects our commitment to People, Place, and Planet. The accreditation encompasses work across lots of different areas, including monitoring and reducing our carbon footprint, supporting biodiversity, promoting our Island as a visitor destination, supporting local charities and community, promoting greener travel, and paying our team a Living Wage.

We’ve achieved Gold Awards across our group at Banjo, Oyster Box & Jersey Crab Shack, and at Café Ubé.

What else are we doing to demonstrate our dedication?

As well as achieving Green Tourism accreditation, we’ve also become an Eco-Active Leader business as part of the Government of Jersey’s eco-active business network. This recognises local businesses that are leading the way in terms of Sustainability.

Green Initiatives (1)

Sustainability is a journey, and we know there’s always more that we could be doing! We constantly review our processes, initiatives, and impact, and regularly make changes to make ourselves ‘greener.’

What’s the latest?

One of our most recent green initiatives is our ‘ReCYCLE’ scheme: an initiative offering our employees a subsidy towards buying a refurbished bike. The ReCYCLE scheme is in partnership with Jersey’s Acorn Reuse Centre, which accepts donations of bikes that would otherwise have gone to landfill. The Acorn team give the bikes a full service before they’re sold, making sure they’re in full working order and ready to take to Jersey’s roads. Our team can go to Acorn and choose any bike that suits them, and will receive £30 from us towards the cost.

This scheme aims to encourage our staff to cycle to work rather than driving, and also to explore Jersey on two wheels on their days off. Cycling has plenty of benefits – it’s fun, it’s a great way to get some fresh air, it’s good exercise, and it’s great for mental wellbeing, too.
